Re: Summer Session 2023-24
Dear Students,
If you wish to enrol summer courses, please pay attention to the following and refer to the “Information on Summer Session, 2023-24” now posted on RES homepage for details.
1. |
Maximum Course Load |
Please note that, except with prior permission of the Dean of the Faculty to which the student belongs, a student shall take no more than 6 units of courses in the Summer Session. In addition, the year course load for students is 39 units. |
a. Application for exceeding year course load of 39 units – to apply via CUSIS |
The remaining course load for taking summer courses is available under “Enrolment Dates” on CUSIS, e.g. if a student enrolled 18 units in 1st term 2023-24 and 15 units in 2nd term 2023-24, the remaining course load will be 39 – 18 – 15 = 6 units for taking summer courses. For any students under special circumstances who have to apply for exceeding year course load of 39 units, they MUST follow the application periods listed below to submit the application under CUSIS. They MUST also read the information on RES homepage prior to submitting the application. |

b. Application for taking MORE THAN 6 units – to apply with Faculty Office by email Unless with very strong reasons (e.g. making up graduation requirements) to take more than 6 units in the Summer Session, students are normally approved to take up to 6 units of courses for Summer Session. For students with very special circumstances to take more than 6 units of courses, they should send an email to the Faculty Office (to which the student belongs) and seek approval from the Faculty Dean concerned to take more than 6 units in the Summer Session. The Faculty will consider the application and pass the approval to RES directly. It is not necessary for students to submit the approval letter/email to RES. Only upon the approval given by the Faculty, RES will adjust the course load for the students concerned. Please approach the Faculty Office for any questions regarding your application results. The application deadline for this application is set at 17:30 HKT on 28 March 2024 for updating course load for the course registration round that takes place from 8-10 April 2024. Submission after this deadline will only be entertained during the course add/drop period in May 2024 for the Summer Session. |

Graduating students take summer courses |
Graduating students (i.e. students whose expected year/term of graduation is 2nd term 2023-24) MUST seek the approval of Major Department for taking the summer course by completing the form “Application Form for Enrolling Summer Session” and submit the approved form to RES on or before 28 March 2024, or at the time prior to adding courses if they have not done so by the above deadline. System will NOT allow graduating students to register any summer courses (including courses offered in the CUHK International Summer School) if they have NOT got the approval of their Major Department. The graduation results of graduating students taking summer courses will be announced in mid-August or after. Unlike the main batch of graduating students whose degree will be conferred on 31 July 2024, their degrees will be conferred on 15 October 2024, subject to fulfillment of all graduation requirements. This may affect their applications for further studies or job-seeking. Therefore, students MUST consider carefully if they plan to take summer courses. In past years, some students had encountered problems in admission to postgraduate programmes or registration to a professional qualification if their degree conferment is beyond 31 July of a calendar year. |

3. |
Students on suspension of study/services |
Students who are on suspension of study for the whole academic year or 2nd term 2023-24 (excluding those participating in exchange programme or internship) are unable to register summer courses under CUSIS. If they have special circumstances and would like to enroll in Summer Session, they need to seek special approval from the Major Department and submit the approved “Application Form for Enrolling Summer Session” by 28 March 2024 to RES, or at the time prior to adding courses if they have not done so by the above deadline. For some students who have already been suspended from University services in accordance with the University Regulations, they cannot register summer courses unless they have taken the appropriate actions. |
