Exemptions by Attainment for New Students Admitted with Advanced Standing in 2025-26

University Core Requirement Courses – Chinese and English Language Courses

Discipline/faculty-specific English Language Course

1. 　Exemption from the Discipline/faculty-specific English language course

Students who possess the following verified qualifications or results in the admission records transferred/submitted to CUHK will be exempted from the 3-unit Discipline/faculty-specific English language course.

Qualifications or Results in Admission Records
HKDSE	Level 5* or 5** in English Language
HKALE	Grade A in Use of English
IB	Grade 5 or above in English A: Literature/ English A: Language and Literature (HL) Grade 6 or above in English B (HL) Grade 6 or above in English A: Literature/ English A: Language and Literature (SL)
AP	Grade 5 in English Language/ English Language and Composition/ English Literature and Composition
GCE (ASL)	Grade A in English Language (ASL)
Cambridge Pre-U	Grade D1, D2 or D3 in Literature in English
TOEFL	590 or above (Paper) or 243 or above (CBT) or 96 or above (IBT)
--	Associate Degree (AD) Holders

2.　 Application for Exemptions by Attainment from Discipline/faculty-specific English language Course

Except students listed in (1) who have been, based on the admission qualifications or results, exempted from the above English course, other students having the specific qualifications or results MUST apply on their own (click here for the Application Form) during the application period from 18 August to 1 September 2025 for exemption from the Discipline/faculty-specific English language course. Late application will not be accepted, except for late registration students.

3. 　Pre-assigned to Discipline/faculty-specific English language course

Students who do not apply for exemption or do not possess the admission qualifications or results as listed in (1) above will be pre-assigned to the Discipline/faculty-specific English language course according to their Faculties. Please refer to “University Core Requirements for Year 1 Students 2025-26” for detailed course registration arrangements.

Non-credit Bearing Chinese Course CHLT1105

1. 　Exemption from CHLT1105

Students who possess the following verified qualifications or results in the admission records transferred/submitted to CUHK will be exempted from the non-credit bearing Chinese course (CHLT1105).

Qualifications or Results in Admission Records
HKDSE	Level 5** in Chinese Language
HKALE	Grade A in Chinese Language and Culture
IB	Grade 7 in Chinese A: Literature/ Chinese A: Language and Literature (HL)
AP	Grade 5 in Chinese Language and Culture
GCE (AL)	Grade A* in Chinese (AL)
Cambridge Pre-U	Grade D1 or D2 in Mandarin Chinese
National Higher Education Entrance Examination (Gao Kao)	130 marks or above (with 150 as the full marks) in Chinese Language
Department Required Test (Taiwan)	70 marks or above (with 100 as the full marks) in Chinese
--	Associate Degree (AD)/ Higher Diploma (HD) Holders

2. 　Students exempted by the Senate from the Chinese Language requirements for admission

Students exempted by the Senate from the Chinese language requirements for admission will NOT be pre-assigned to CHLT1105. They will be pre-assigned the course “Self-Learning Elementary Chinese” (CHL1104) in their first year of attendance.

3. 　Application for Exemptions by Attainment from CHLT1105

Except students listed in (1) and (2) above who have been, based on the admission qualifications or results, exempted from CHLT1105 or to take CHLT1104, other students having the specific qualifications or results MUST apply on their own (click here for the Application Form) during the application period from 18 August to 1 September 2025 for exemption from CHLT1105. Late application will not be accepted, except for late registration students.

4. 　Pre-assigned to CHLT1105

Students who do not apply for exemption or do not possess the admission qualifications or results as in (1) above will be pre-assigned to CHLT1105 according to their Faculties. Please refer to “University Core Requirements for Year 1 Students 2025-26” for detailed course registration arrangements.
