New Students Admitted to Year 1 in 2024-25
English Language
1. Exemption from ELTU1001 (Foundation English for University Studies)
Students who have the following verified qualifications or results in the admission records transferred/submitted to CUHK will be exempted from ELTU1001. However, they are still required to submit under CUSIS (from 2 September to 31 December 2024) the application for exemption by attainment (How to apply for Exemption by Attainment on CUSIS). For students who wish to take the appropriate English course, please approach English Language Teaching Unit. Students exempted from ELTU1001 are required to take 1 unit of specific language enhancement course to fulfill the overall units required for graduation, except students of the MBChB Programme. Details of the specific language enhancement courses are available in the Student Handbook.

2. ELTU1002 (English Communication for University Studies)
Students who have the following verified qualifications or results in the admission records transferred /submitted to CUHK will be pre-assigned to ELTU1002.

3. Application for Exemption from ELTU1001 or Taking ELTU1002
Except students listed in (1) and (2) who have been, based on the admission qualifications or results, exempted from ELTU1001 or to be pre-assigned to take ELTU1002, other students having the specific qualifications or results MUST apply on their own (click here for the Application Form) for exemption from ELTU1001 or to take ELTU1002 during the application period from 16 August to 1 September 2024. Late application will not be accepted, except late registration students.

4. Pre-assigned to ELTU 1001
Students who do not apply for exemption or do not have the above-mentioned admission qualifications or results in (1) or (2) will be pre-assigned to ELTU1001 according to their Faculties. Please refer to “University Core Requirements for Year 1 Students 2024-25” for detailed course registration arrangements.
Chinese Language
1. Exemption from CHLT1001 and 1002 (University Chinese I & II)
Students who have the following verified qualifications or results in the admission records transferred/submitted to CUHK will be exempted from CHLT1001 and CHLT1002. However, they are still required to submit under CUSIS (from 2 September to 31 December 2024) the application for exemption by attainment (How to apply for Exemption by Attainment on CUSIS). For students who wish to take the appropriate Chinese course, please approach the Department of Chinese Language and Literature. Students exempted from CHLT1001 and CHLT1002 are required to take 2 units of specific language enhancement courses to fulfill the overall units required for graduation, except students of the MBChB Programme. Details of the specific language enhancement courses are available in the Student Handbook.

2. Students exempted by Senate from the Chinese Language requirements for admission
Students exempted by Senate from the Chinese language requirements for admission will NOT be pre-assigned to CHLT1001 and CHLT1002. They should approach the Department of Chinese Language and Literature for assessment to take the appropriate course(s).
3. Application for Exemption by Attainment from CHLT1001 and CHLT1002
Except students listed in (1) and (2) who have been, based on the admission qualifications or results, exempted from CHLT1001 and CHLT1002 or to take other appropriate courses(s), other students having the specific qualifications or results MUST apply on their own (click here for the Application Form) for exemption from CHLT1001 and CHLT1002 during the application period from 16 August to 1 September 2024. Late application will not be accepted, except late registration students.

4. Pre-assigned to CHLT1001 and CHLT1002
Students who do not apply for exemption or do not have the above-mentioned admission qualifications or results in (1) will be pre-assigned to CHLT1001 in their first year of attendance and CHLT1002 in their second year attendance, according to their Faculties.
