FAQ for Absence from Centralized Course Examinations

1 If I cannot attend the Centralized Course Examinations, what should I do?

A student who for medical or other compelling reasons is unable to sit for any Centralized Course Examinations MUST apply for absence from examination in accordance with University Regulations.

  1. For reasons other than medical reasons: Students should submit application as early as possible with related supporting documents for consideration and approval by relevant approval authority.
  2. For medical and/or other health reasons: Students should submit application with the original copy of certificate signed by a registered medical practitioner recommending sick leave covering the date(s) of the examination concerned (NOT attendance certificate) at the earliest possible instance but in any case not later than 5 working days after the examination concerned.

Please submit the application form in person to the following office with the related original copy of the supporting documents:

  1. Registration and Examinations Section (10/F, YIA): Full-time Undergraduate Students
  2. Office of Academic Links (i-Centre, 1/F, YIA): IASP Students
  3. Graduate School Office (7/F, YIA): Postgraduate Students

A student who is absent from any examination without permission shall be given a failure grade in that examination.

2 If I want to apply for absence from examinations due to non-medical reasons, what kind of supporting document do I need to submit?

If not due to illness or other health reasons, students should attend the Centralized Course Examinations according to their individual examination timetable, and should only apply for absence from examinations for compelling reasons/events, which cannot be rescheduled (e.g. to participate in competition, to attend job interview, to sit for external/professional examinations, to attend funeral of relatives, etc.). Documents/information such as invitation letters from the competition organizer, interview letter/email from company, external examination schedule, information showing that the event cannot be rescheduled, etc. should be submitted as supporting evidence for consideration by the relevant authority. Please refer to FAQ1 for application details.

Please note that application for absence from examinations due to non-compelling reasons (e.g. to attend graduation ceremony), to attend events that can be rescheduled (e.g. drivers license test), or early purchase of air tickets will normally NOT be accepted as reason for application for absence from examinations.
