Re:

Summer Session 2025-26

Dear Students,

If you wish to enrol summer courses, please pay attention to the following and refer to the “Information on Summer Session, 2025-26” now posted on the website of the Registration and Examinations Section (RES) for details.

1.  Maximum course load

Please note that, except with prior permission of the Dean of the Faculty to which the student belongs, a student shall take no more than 6 units of courses in the Summer Session. In addition, the year course load for students is 39 units.

Students should refer to “Enrolment Dates” on CUSIS for the information of his/her remaining course load for taking summer courses.  For example, if a student enrolled 18 units in 1st term 2025-26 and 15 units in 2nd term 2025-26, the remaining course load for taking summer courses will be 39 – 18 – 15 = 6 units.

a.   Application for exceeding year course load of 39 units – to apply via CUSIS

Any students under special circumstances who would like to apply for exceeding year course load of 39 units MUST submit the application under CUSIS within the application periods listed below. They MUST also read the information on RES website prior to submitting the application.

  Application Period
20 March – 27 March 2026 : for updating year course load for course registration period starting from 8 April 2026
23 April – 30 April 2026 : for updating year course load for course add/drop period starting from 11 May 2026
Applications should be submitted under CUSIS, and late applications will NOT be accepted.

b.   Application for taking MORE THAN 6 units in Summer Session – application submitted to the Faculty Office by email

Unless with very strong reasons (e.g. making up graduation requirements) to take more than 6 units in the Summer Session, students are normally allowed to take up to 6 units of courses for Summer Session. Students with very special reasons for taking more than 6 units of courses should send an email to the Faculty Office (to which the student belongs) and seek approval from the Faculty Dean concerned to take more than 6 units in the Summer Session. The Faculty will consider the application and pass the approval to RES directly. It is not necessary for the students to submit the approval letter/email to RES. RES will adjust the course load for the students concerned upon receiving the approval from the Faculty. Please approach the Faculty Office for any questions regarding your application.

The deadline for application for taking more than 6 units in Summer Session is at 4:00 p.m. on 27 March 2026 for updating course load for the course registration round that will take place from 8 – 10 April 2026. Adjustment of course load for applications received after this deadline will only be made for the course add/drop period in May 2026.

2. Graduating students to take summer courses

Graduating students (i.e. students whose expected year/term of graduation is 2nd term 2025-26) who would like to take summer courses MUST seek the approval of Major Department/School/Programme by completing the “Application Form for Enrolling Summer Session” and submit the approved form to RES on or before 27 March 2026, or at the time prior to adding courses if they have not done so by the above deadline.  Unless approval from Major Department/School/Programme has been granted, system will NOT allow graduating students to register any summer courses (including courses offered under the CUHK International Summer School).

The graduation results of graduating students taking summer courses will be announced in mid-August or after. Unlike the main batch of graduating students whose degree will be conferred on 31 July 2026, their degrees will be conferred on 15 October 2026, subject to fulfillment of all graduation requirements. As this may affect their applications for further studies or job-seeking, students MUST consider carefully whether to take summer courses. In the past years, some students had encountered problems in admission to postgraduate programmes or registration to a professional qualification if their degree conferment is beyond 31 July of a calendar year.

3.  Students on suspension of study/services

CUSIS will bar students who are on suspension of study for the whole academic year or in 2nd term 2025-26 (excluding those participating in exchange programme or internship) from registering summer courses.  If they have special reasons and would like to enroll in Summer Session, they need to seek special approval from the Major Department/School/Programme by completing the “Application Form for Enrolling Summer Session” and submit the approved form to RES by 27 March 2026, or at the time prior to adding courses if they have not done so by the above deadline.

Students who have been suspended from University services in accordance with relevant University Regulations cannot register summer courses unless they have taken the appropriate actions.

4.  Course registration and course add/drop:

Time appointment for course selection is now available in “Enrolment Dates” under CUSIS. From 30 March 2026 onwards, students may make use of the CUSIS system functions to pre-select classes.  Actual course registration period under CUSIS will be from 8 April 2026 (8:30p.m.) to 10 April 2026 (8:30p.m.).  Please note that the waitlist during the course enrolment period will be purged after the course registration period. Students MUST add the intended course again during the course add/drop period if they still wish to enrol the course then.

Please take note of the following arrangements for course add/drop:
  i.

For classes with first teaching day that commences from 11 May to 16 May 2026:

Except for classes with add/drop consent, students should perform course add/drop using the system functions under CUSIS from 11 May 2026 (8:30p.m., Monday) to 17 May 2026 (8:30p.m., Sunday).  For classes with add/drop consent, students should seek course offering unit’s approval by submitting the “Course Add/Drop Form for University Summer Session”.

  ii.

For classes with first teaching day that commences on or after 18 May 2026:

Students need to approach the course offering unit concerned and submit the “Course Add/Drop Form for University Summer Session” to seek approval for course add/drop within the first teaching week. For example, if the first teaching day of a class is on 1 June, students should approach the course offering Department on or before 7 June for course add/drop.

5.  FAQ, enquiry hotline and e-mail enquiry for course registration

Please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) posted under RES website for the questions or problems frequently raised by students during the course enrolment process.  Considering course registration under CUSIS will begin at 8:30p.m. on 8 April 2026, our hotline support 3943 9888 and technical support of the Information Technology Services Centre (ITSC) will be extended up to 9:30p.m. on 8 April 2026.  Students may also send enquiries via e-mail, with screen capture of the problem messages if possible, to ugadmin@cuhk.edu.hk.  Our services and support will follow our normal office hours on other working days.
